Suppositories

Suppositories are medications inserted into the body through the anus or

vaginal canal where  they dissolve to release medicine. Suppositories may be used in the following situations:

1) A patient can’t swallow or tolerate an oral medication due to age, nausea/vomiting, or another medical condition. A suppository may then be used  to deliver the medication rectally.

2) A suppository may be used to treat various conditions of the anus and digestive system such as hemorrhoids & ulcerative colitis

3) A suppository may be used to treat conditions of the vagina such as: a vaginal  yeast infection.

Unfortunately, there are very few manufactured medications that are available in a suppository  form on the market. Therefore, compounding allows us to make a variety of medications into a  suppository form as needed to optimize patient care. For example, we can take a medication that would normally only be available as an oral tablet, and make it into a suppository.
